Storm Benjamin blew through and caused leaves to drop on all my trees, so this week has seen me busy raking them up to make leaf mould. The gardener has also been a help, sweeping them up with the lawn mower, but there are plenty more for him when he next comes! The rest of the week has seen sunshine and showers, keeping the plants happy.

Time now for my six for this week………..

Hundreds of eating apples are now ready, but unfortunately you can’t even give them away, everyone has so many, boxes at gateways are still full .

There is no denying that autumn is with us with all the berries and colours that are in our gardens now. It seems that we will have bumper crops of berries, thanks to the good spring which brought us lots of flowers, so the birds and little mammals will be happy. Autumn tints are coming on nicely, making the garden and the surrounding countryside look very colourful. There was so much for me to photograph this week, probably enough for next week too, so lets get on with this week’s offering.

Acer Osakazuki’s colour isn’t quite there yet, but there is a lot of difference from last week.

My apologies for missing the last couple of SOSs, the first week was because I was in Bristol with my daughter, she had had a nasty accident falling downstairs in her house, but is now on the mend and doing really well, nothing broken, thank goodness, but all the tendons in both knees have been torn, which is bad enough. Last Saturday I wandered round the garden and really there wasn’t anything worth photographing that you hadn’t seen before. Autumn has now really taken hold, the leaves are starting to change colour and it is much cooler first thing in the morning. This week I did manage to find a few things to photograph, so on with SOS.

Mahonia nitans Cabaret in full autumn glory, I think the leaves are this wonderful colour because of the summer drought.

Another week of sunshine and showers, the grass has grown so much and the gardener is on holiday! There are more signs of life in the garden so once more I’m feeling more positive about everything, maybe next year will be ok after all. I didn’t think I would be able to find six photos worth showing you, but just about managed it, so here goes………

Another clump of Colchicums has appeared, these were split from the clump that I showed you last week and never seem to flower at the same time.

More lovely rain, lots more of it, which is making the garden and me very happy. Shrubs which looked dead are now sprouting more new leaves and shrubs which will flower next spring are sporting lovely flower buds which I hadn’t thought I would see due to the drought. I think a few shrubs will need to be cut back quite a bit, but things are looking more positive on the gardening front.

On with Six on Saturday…………

Cochicums have popped up on the rockery, ferns have also popped up which I think need moving, so that I can see the Colchicums from the house.

Having lovely rain each day has made such a difference to the garden, walking into the woodland has almost the same feeling as in February when the snowdrops are out in flower. This time though, it is the Cyclamen hederifolium that are wowing me, they have exploded everywhere! The ants have been busy spreading seeds far and wide over the years since I planted the corms many years ago and it is now that I am seeing the results improving year on year. Well done ants!

I had been thinking that I wouldn’t manage to find 6 that were worth showing to you, but here goes…………….

So lovely to see so many cyclamen flowers in amongst all the fallen leaves.

What a difference a week makes, especially when we have a week of lots of showers! At last we have had the rain we wanted and we will be happy with all the rain that is forecast for next week too. I had thought that I would be showing photos of all my hardy fuchsias this week, but most have packed up flowering with all the heat, so it is a mixed bag once more for SOS.

One fuchsia that is still going strong is Delta Sarah, she was supposed to have been moved a few years ago but this is growth from the root that must have been left behind and is growing over 6 ft tall! I think I can use this growth for some cuttings , then a hedge of it would seem to be a good idea if she can take the heat so well.

Another week with hardly any rain, just a bit of drizzle and still lots of sunshine. We will hopefully be getting some rain next week, but our weather forecaster still says that it won’t be enough. Wandering round yesterday to take my photographs, I was very concious of how brown my garden has become, some plants are still doing very well but some are definitely suffering. One of the plants that are doing well are the roses, so that is what I have photographed for this weeks six.

Rosa Abraham Darby in the front garden has been opening lots of flowers recently, he is a good one.

The garden is now looking rather autumnal in places, the leaves are changing colour, which seems rather early but understandable in view of the drought and heat that we have been having. We actually have had a couple of little showers this week, but nowhere near enough, it will take a long time to get things back to normal. I woke up on Friday to thick fog but after a couple of hours the sun came through once more and the temperature rose  again…… enough…… time for SOS so must get out and find plenty of things to photograph.

First of all I spotted the seeds on Acer Osakazuki, they are the same colour that the leaves will become in a few weeks time.So far there is no sign of the leaves changing colour yet.

Another week has gone by with hardly any rain, just a bit of drizzle on a couple of days, but I believe that we are due some proper rain tomorrow, I really hope it arrives. Last weekend was taken up with a visit from my latest grandson and his parents. He is now walking and into Everything, we needed eyes in the back of our heads! He really enjoyed walking round the garden and treated the flowers with respect, which was lovely. Anyway, on with SOS with this weeks offering………….

The seedhead of Peony mlokosewitschii which flowered in the spring. These are not viable seeds, they would have to be black to be viable.
